Our latest newsletter, Summer 2022, no.65, features our Christmas party and AGM, our State Landcare award, Brigitte’s popular blog (she rescues an eagle), members’ articles on their projects and reports of events, Bruce’s rainfall record, a joint project with the Shire on Snow Gums, and short items on Blue Wrens and Wattles.
Today our Landcare group won the Australian Community Media Landcare Community Group Award at the 2021 Victorian Landcare Awards online ceremony. “This award acknowledges an outstanding community group that is improving sustainable land use and/or is undertaking on-ground action to protect, enhance or restore the natural values of an area on behalf of the community.” (Landcare Victoria)

We are thrilled that the Group’s work has been acknowledged. Our group will go forward as the Victorian nominee for the ACM Landcare Community Group Award at the 2022 National Landcare Awards in Sydney.

Newham Primary School was announced as the winner of the Woolworths Junior Landcare Team Award at the 2021 National Landcare Awards Gala on 5 August 2021. A video of the the school’s student sustainability leaders accepting the Junior Landcare Team Award on behalf of the school is at https://vimeo.com/583552822. The students acknowledged the contribution of everyone who has been involved in Landcare projects at the school, including Newham and District Landcare Group for their leadership, support and mentoring, and in particular Penny and Hilary Roberts, Jim Sansom, and the late Jenny Waugh. They also thanked the Newham Propagation Group, Newham Garden Club, past and present students, parents and community members for all their hard work on projects.

Newham Landcare is delighted to share to share our 5 minute video
which promotes the important role of the Cobaw Biolink in enhancing the connections between Mount Macedon and the Cobaw Range on both private and public land. The video aims to engage landholders and residents and make them aware that their contribution, no matter how big or small, is environmentally vital. Protecting existing high quality native vegetation and creating connectivity in the biolink will help native plants and animals adapt to climate change. Spotlight surveys on habitat-rich roadsides round Newham found more animals present in the Cobaw Biolink than during similar surveys on Mount Macedon.
Landholders can help contribute to the biolink through enhancing waterways, undertaking weed and pest control, protecting remnant vegetation and revegetation and encouraging native grasslands on their properties.
