Planting Days
The following notes aim to give our members some guidelines on planting days.
Spring and Autumn Planting Days
The Committee has determined that:
- As a Group we do not want to have more than 2 planting days per annum in our program (one in Autumn and one in Spring). These always include lunch, provided by the Landcare group if on public land eg Hanging Rock, Newham Primary School, or the host landowner when undertaken on private land.
- These planting days have 3 components – practical, social and educative.
- We wish to maximize attendance on these days and do not want to create an onerous, regular workload. Therefore we have set a limit of 2 days per year and a maximum of 3 hours for the practical component [inclusive of time for demonstrations or plant identification etc.].
- Choice of location will be decided by the committee in Autumn for the following Spring and in Spring for the following Autumn.
- We have two planting days a year at Hanging Rock. In 2012 Hanging Rock Reserve became the focus for our two ‘official’ planting days. Removal of woody weeds along the creek was undertaken by a contractor and volunteers then planted 1200 indigenous native under-storey plants, funded by a grant obtained by the Landcare group. Since then thousands more indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses have been planted, and much weeding and maintenance work undertaken. See Events page for details.
If you enjoy our planting days, there are plenty of other opportunities – members may call for assistance with revegetation works on their property. You can expect these ‘member plantings’ to involve two hours of activity, followed by almost as long over lunch! Working as a group on each others properties is a most enjoyable way to get things done. Any member may apply to host a planting day by submitting a written request – outlining plans for the day – to a committee member.
